What Happens During a Craniosacral Therapy Session?

One of the questions I hear most often is, "What actually happens during a craniosacral therapy session?"
It's a fair question.
Unlike a traditional massage, craniosacral therapy isn't about working deep into the muscles or trying to force your body to change. It's a gentle, hands-on approach that works with your nervous system, creating space for your body to release patterns of tension it may have been holding onto for months—or even years.
Every session is unique because every person is unique.
We Start With a Conversation
Before we begin, we take a few moments to check in.
Maybe you're experiencing physical pain. Maybe you've been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, emotionally stuck, or simply disconnected from yourself.
You don't need to have all the answers. You don't even need to know exactly why you're there.
Sometimes your body already knows where it wants to begin.
During the Session
You'll remain fully clothed and lie comfortably on the treatment table.
Using a very gentle touch, I'll begin listening to your body's subtle cues. Rather than trying to "fix" you, I'm paying attention to where your body may be holding tension, restriction, or stress.
Many people are surprised by how much can happen with such a light touch.
Some people feel deeply relaxed.
Some notice areas of tension beginning to soften.
Some experience emotions, memories, or insights that naturally arise as their nervous system settles.
Others simply enjoy an hour of quiet that they rarely give themselves.
There isn't a right or wrong experience.
Your body responds in the way it needs to.
Why Gentle Can Be So Powerful
Our nervous systems are incredibly intelligent.
When we constantly push through stress, our bodies often adapt by holding tension as a way of protecting us.
Sometimes what the body needs isn't more pressure.
Sometimes it needs enough safety to let go.
When your nervous system begins to feel safe, your body often starts doing what it naturally knows how to do—release, regulate, and restore balance.
What You Might Notice Afterwards
Every experience is different, but people often tell me they leave feeling:
More grounded
More present
Less tense
More connected to themselves
Calmer mentally and emotionally
Better able to handle everyday stress
Sometimes the shifts are immediate.
Other times they unfold over the next few days as the body continues to integrate the session.
It's Not About Being Fixed
One of the things I love most about craniosacral therapy is that it isn't about fixing you.
I don't believe you're broken.
My role is to create a space where your body can do what it's naturally designed to do when given the opportunity: heal, regulate, and find its own balance.
Every session is an invitation to slow down, listen inward, and reconnect with yourself.
And often, that's where the most meaningful shifts begin.
