You Can’t Control Everything. What Can You Choose?

There are a lot of things we don’t get to control.
Other people’s behavior.
Traffic.
Someone changing plans.
An unexpected expense.
What someone thinks of us.
Whether everything goes according to schedule.
And yet we can spend an enormous amount of energy wishing those things were different.
Sometimes without realizing it.
We replay conversations.
We mentally argue with what happened.
We try to anticipate every possible outcome.
We hold tension around situations that have already occurred.
None of this means you shouldn’t be frustrated, disappointed, angry, or affected by what happens around you.
You’re human.
But there’s a useful question hiding underneath all of it:
What part of this is actually mine to choose?
Bringing Your Attention Back to Yourself
You may not get to choose what someone else does.
You can choose whether you continue engaging.
You may not be able to change what happened this morning.
You can notice whether you’re still carrying it at 4 PM.
You may not have control over an unexpected change.
You can decide what you need now that circumstances are different.
Choice doesn’t mean control.
It means recognizing where you still have agency.
Start Small With What You Can Control
When you notice yourself caught in something you cannot change, pause and ask:
What am I trying to control right now?
Then:
What do I actually have a choice about?
Maybe you can leave.
Maybe you can say no.
Maybe you can have the conversation.
Maybe you can stop having the conversation.
Maybe you can take a walk, change your plans, ask for help, or simply acknowledge that you're disappointed.
Sometimes there isn't an immediate action to take.
The choice might simply be where you place your attention next.
This isn't about pretending difficult things don't affect you.
It's about noticing when your energy is being consumed by something you don't have the power to change—and bringing some of that energy back to what you do.
You can't control everything.
Thankfully, you don't have to.
